The Faculty of Humanities at the University of Pretoria plans to host an interdisciplinary conference on children’s literature and storytelling in Africa. The conference will take place at the Future Africa Centre on the university’s tranquil Hillcrest campus from 30th to 31st March, 2020.
We invite papers and suggestions for panel discussions that focus on the challenges (multilingualism/ multiculturalism/ access to books), opportunities (available resources/ new media/ stories as tools for promoting development) and aesthetic and theoretical approaches to African children and their stories. The conference is open to submissions from all fields, but the intention is to highlight broad issues around children and stories on our continent as well as in the global south more generally rather than to focus narrowly on pedagogic approaches to the teaching of reading.
Keynote speakers will be Prof. Margot Hillel (Australian Catholic University) and Prof. Helen Yitah (University of Ghana).
Those interested in being part of the conversation are asked to send brief biographies indicating their institutional affiliation, if any, and abstracts of approximately 300 words to http://conferences.up.ac.za/index.php/2020_Child-Africa-Story_2020/2020_Child-Africa-Story_2020/index by 30th November 2019.
